Step One: We talk on the phone and get acquainted. We discuss any questions or issues relevant to your situation, and if everyone is still interested, we schedule a first session.
Step Two: The goal for the first session is to learn your individual strengths and identify your key challenges, so as to customize the lessons and target your needs. Towards this end, the first session is primarily diagnostic. We go over all the verbal section test categories, from reading comprehension to grammar and vocabulary based questions. For each problem, I will focus more on what your thought process is as you answer the question, rather than whether your answer is right or wrong. Once I learn your thinking strategies and processes, I’ll be able to diagnose the source of your errors and can begin to teach the skills and approaches best suited to your style and needs.
Step Three: The following sessions concentrate on the areas of greatest need, as determined by the initial session. We can address one or more particular test category or skill, depending on your needs and preferences. Using the sample tests in the assigned text, we’ll focus on a skill. As we work through the questions together, I’ll teach useful strategies and approaches in context. The success of a particular strategy depends on the learning style of the student, so we’ll experiment together until we find the best fit and the most successful approaches for each question type.
To start, we’ll work slowly and focus on how to answer the questions correctly. Once you’re comfortable with the strategies required by the different challenges posed by the test, we’ll switch gears and focus on timing, working on speed issues, when to accelerate and when to devote the extra time some questions require.
Cancellation Policy: If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, you must contact the instructor a minimum of 24 hours in advance. Otherwise, the student will be responsible for the full fee of the missed session.
Tutoring for test prep works best in two hour sessions. You should bring a copy of the suggested text to the first session.
